Christmas Eve FOTD

I bring to you my first FOTD post. Not a particularly exciting FOTD but I wanted to show you the Cover FX foundation applied as promised.

I really am impressed with this foundation and haven't reached for my tinted moisturiser since!

The products used were the Skin Prep FX primer (my sample has diminished drastically - must find £44 to buy a bottle of the stuff it's fab!) followed by Natural FX in E20 with a dusting of Setting FX in light.

Hope you all had a fabulous Christmas and got lots of lovely gifts! I spent mine curled up in bed with a really bad chest infection that I'm trying to get over even now! These pictures were from Christmas Eve, the last time I wasn't in my pjs!
Nonetheless I still enjoyed my Christmas tucked up in bed with the other half watching the Big Bang box set he got for Christmas. I got some lovely presents and can't wait to get the new wardrobe my FiancĂ© is buying me!

Hope you all have a great New Years Eve and Happy New Year to you all!

Another "summer" dress made winter appropriate by the addition of a chunky knit and tights (two pairs to be precise).
One thing I can't seem to get the hang of is taking OOTD pictures without having a face like a complete fool.  Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Dress - Peacocks
Cardigan - Internacionale
Tights - Pretty Polly
Brogues - New Look

A little close up of a cute belt I picked up from Primark a few months back.

So are we all excited for Christmas?

I'm drinking Cough medicine by the bottle full not literally obv. as I've developed a chesty cough, I'm only hoping it doesn't get any worse as I don't want it to ruin my Christmas!

Barry M Grey 293 - NOTD

This colour is a bit of a strange one. I really wanted a grey polish but I think this may not be the one for me.
In the bottle it's a lovely mid-dark grey, however on my nails it tends to have a green undertone often looking rather like a khaki colour than a grey!
Think I may have to invest in a paler grey next time! Still a fab colour!

Bargain Barry M

Just a quick blog post to share with you this amazing offer in the ASOS sale.
Yes, this baby cost only £6! I've been wanting to try the last 3 colours so it worked out rather well for me!

The Dermatologists Favourite - Cover FX

A few weeks ago an I received an email about a brand called Cover FX, now I have to admit I had never heard of the company before so had a little browse online to see what I could find.
The email was an invitation to visit the Cover FX counter in Harvey Nichols for a colour match by National Make Up Artist by Viktor Charles.
I agreed to an appointment time and so off I went to Harvey Nicks, armed with very little knowledge about the company and it's products, eager to learn more about what seemed a rather unique brand.
When I arrived I was greeted by Viktor, who told me a little about the work of the company before getting set on colour matching me.

Who Are Cover FX?

I was surprised to discover that Cover FX was actually developed in a hospital in Canada by Lee Graff a corrective make-up specialist, who worked alongside chemical engineer Jenny Frankel and dermatologist Dr. Neil Shear. Lee wanted to develop a range of products that were suitable for patients with skin conditions such a rosacea, acne, scars, vitiligo etc. Many of the traditional camouflage make ups used would aggravate the sensitive skin of patients with such conditions so she wanted something that would both cover but be gentle on skin.
And so the Cover FX range was born; a line of skin corrector and perfectors. However it is not just for people with skin conditions - but also for those who want a product that will provide coverage whether it be sheer of full, and also care for the welfare of their skin.

As Cover FX was developed in Canada it is currently in the UK exclusive to Harvey Nichols and I believe selected branches of House of Fraser. Other than the UK it is only available in Canada and America.

The Colour Match

On a day to day basis I tend to wear tinted moisturiser with a little powder for a sheerer coverage so for my colour match I asked Viktor for a light to medium coverage. First he primed my skin with Skin Prep FX (£44 - 30ml) - a nourishing primer and Anti-aging serum. This was a primer that didn't require prior moisturisation and Viktor also recommended it could be used as a night time cream! Viktor provided me with a mini sample to take home - definitely a product I will consider purchasing!

Next I was colour matched with a foundation suitable for skin containing both pink and yellow undertones; Natural FX in E20 (£37 - 30ml) a water based liquid foundation providing moderate coverage. It contains SPF 15 and no perfume, parabens or oil meaning it is suitable for sensitive skin. The product is very hydrating to the skin and leaves a lovely dewy finish.

Viktor told me the importance of setting my foundation with a powder and said it should be done before applying blusher and/or bronzer otherwise the blush/bronze will not "sit" in the right place as blending is hard due the foundation providing a tacky surface for the powder to cling to. He used Setting FX - a Translucent Setting Powder in Light (£29 - 13g) This contains light diffusing minerals which gives the skin a lovely sheen as you can see in the below swatches, without any of the glitter effect that is found with many mineral based products (in my experience). This powder can be used for both cream and powder foundations to extend foundation wear and prevent transfer.

Viktor then applied Bronze FX (£25 - 12g) in gold with a touch of blusher. Swatches of the bronzer can be seen below with and without flash both heavily swatched and slightly swatched. As you can see its a lovely colour suitable for people with a fairer complexion. I don't often use a bronzer as I haven't been able to find one that I find suits my skin as I am never tanned but I am very pleased with this product, it can provide a light flush of bronze and can also be built up for the summer when you want a bit more of a bronzed glow. A tip Viktor gave to me was to place a light dusting of bronzer under my chin where the sun doesn't fall to blend the colour of your face with your neck.

My Opinion and Experience of the Products
Like the way each package says what active ingredients can be found and therapeutic effects they have to the skin
It is good to know a product is available to recommend to people who have skin conditions/birth marks etc.
Is approved and developed by dermatologists
It is slightly pricier than other high end products but have to consider the fact that it's part of a small market of camouflage make ups and is a product that has consideration for the wellbeing of skin
Packaging is sturdy. Reassuring "click" from bronzer packaging.
Listen to the "peel carefully" sticker on the setting powder, I was a little too aggressive and almost ended up in a cloud of powder.
Great coverage - the day I had my colour match, I'd woken with a pounding head and baggy eyes, the dark circles were completely disguised after the application.
They are a cruelty free brand and approved by the PETA.

Colour matches are free at your local Harvey Nichols counter so I would definitely recommend going and trying them for yourself! Sorry I don't have a picture of the make up applied by Viktor, my camera broke the day I had my consultation and the blackberry camera did not suffice. I shall provide an "update post" of the make up applied by myself.

Note - The above products were sent to me by Cover FX after receiving my colour match, however my review is honest and the opinions expressed are as if the products were purchased with my own money.

NYC Park Avenue 246 - NOTD

This colour's a bit of a difficult I can't actually decide what colour it is!
Sometimes it looks purple/mauve, others brown and sometimes it even has a tone of khaki to it!
What do you think?
Answers on a postcard please.....

It's Just Another Winter's Day

Normally I wear this dress with Navy Tights and tan brogues, however today I opted for a pair of black supersoft  tights and my new favourite wedges from Peacocks!

Dress - New Look
Cardigan - H&M
Tights - Primark
Wedges - Peacocks
This dress has been featured on many a dress lovers blog however it's the first time it's made an appearance on mine. I bought mine from the fabulous tall section at New Look so the hemline was more "appropriate" for my liking :p

The thing I love about the dress is it's suitability for all year round. Summer time sees bare arms and legs, come A/W throw on a cardi and some tights and your good to go!

Are you one for trans-seasonal outfits? How do you update your wardrobe for the cold weather?

Barry M Silver Cascade - NOTD

Isn't it just beautiful? It's a pink base containing silver glitter with a sprinkling of green and red. This was after 3 thin coats which is pretty good for a glitter. I would recommend a top coat as I forgot and it chips a little without one.
I'd seen a few swatches of this online and really wanted to try it out for myself. I had a look in my local superdrug and boots but could never find it.
I decided that online would be my best shot but I wasn't impressed by the knowledge that most people end up paying 4 or 5 pounds PLUS P+P for a polish that retails at £2.99. However I was simply delighted to stumble across a website called that sold Barry M Nail Polishes for £2.25 with FREE, yes free, P+P. A little wary that it may be too good to be true I had a browse online for reviews and found many a happy customer.
I decided to place my order and used my Paypal account as an "extra precaution". The order was placed late Saturday evening and my polish arrived safely on the Thursday morning - extremely good for free delivery!

So I thought I would share my experiences of this site with you. I am no way involved with this company and they have not asked me to do this post, I just thought many a beauty junkie would find this site useful as it stocks the likes of Barry M, Mac etc for less than retail price!

Do let me know if any of you decide to order from this site and what bargains you buy! :D

p.s. My camera crisis is now over as my Brother bought me a brand spanking shiny new camera for christmas and has let me have it early! Hurrah!

Happy Birthday Science Geek Chic

Yes, my little blog is 1 year old today! I only realised it's "birthday" was coming up the beginning of this week otherwise I would have tried to organise a little giveaway!
Nonetheless I would like to say a HUGE thankyou to all of my followers! I know my blog isn't as fab and fancy as many others out there but I blog because I enjoy it and knowing there are over 100 lovely people who like listening to my rambles makes things even better :)

I hope you all enjoy your weekend! Tonight I'm off for a meal with some other Manchester bloggers for a pre-christmas get together! I would say "pictures to follow" however I discovered yesterday that my camera has lost the will to focus!

A Few Recent Buys

Hey guys,
just a quick post to show you a few goodies I've treated myself to after several weeks of not buying anything. They all were great bargains of course :)

(Apologies for the poor picture quality have misplaced both how is that possible? of my camera leads and have a dead battery so these were the best of a bad batch from using my Mum's Blackberry and artificial lighting!

Dorothy Perkins

Yes, these beautiful creatures cost me only £21.25 as they were on a special promotion for 3 days at £20 off and there was also a 15% off code running alongside this as well as FREE DELIVERY! They're still available online but are now £45

I know, I've already bought a pair of wedge boots, but my Mum ordered these in both a 7 and an 8. The 8's fitted her and the 7 me so I couldn't resist dishing out £12 rather than see them go to store. My reasoning is I can wear these with patterned dresses as snake effect boots and leopard print don't mix too well.

The picture doesn't do the dress much justice, it's a lovely skater style dress. The material is different to most dresses as it isn't a typical jersey. My brother described it as "school dress material"?? The pink is a more vivid contrast on the black IRL, this picture shows it better.

Couldn't resist buying this for only £3 down from £8. I have a navy coat which will look lovely with this.

Thought this belt was too adorable;  polka dots and a bow in 1? Yes please! Wish there were more colours available!

Lilac Foil - Free/ Silver Foil - £3.99/ Grey - £2.99
As many of you will know Superdrug are running an offer on Barry M that if you spend over £6 on Barry M you get a bottle of limited edition Lilac Foil worth £3.99 for free. I've tried this colour and it really is gorgeous! I would recommend you pick it up!

There's also a limited edition bottle available in Boots on the same spend over £6; theirs is a glitter polish but to me it doesn't look anywhere near as great as Juicy Jules by Models Own so the Superdrug offer is much better!

Hope you enjoyed my little haul! Hope all of you are doing well!
